Spiritual Direction

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction helps the directee become attentive to God's grace at work in everyday life, discern God's leading, respond to His call, and enter into an intimate relationship with Him.

Who Is Spiritual Direction For?

Those who feel their relationship with God has become stagnant or distant, and who long for greater intimacy with Him

Those who are facing a major decision and desire to discern God's leading and respond to Him

How to Find a Spiritual Director

1

Start with prayer. The God who has stirred this longing in your heart is already at work, ready to respond to that desire.

2

Prayerfully review the backgrounds of potential spiritual directors, and reach out for further conversation by email or phone.

3

Schedule a meeting. While in-person spiritual companionship is usually ideal, some directors also offer phone or online sessions — meet together to discern whether this is the spiritual companionship relationship the Lord has prepared for you.

4

Confirm the practical details: where you'll meet, how often, and other logistics.

Fee Information

All spiritual direction offered by ASCC is provided free of charge in principle. However, if you are financially able, a suggested contribution of $50 per session is welcome. These funds help support spiritual directors, ASCC's administrative costs, and the needs of the mission field.

To give, please send an e-transfer to [email protected], and include the name of your spiritual director in the memo/notes field. Any amount of support is a tremendous encouragement and help to us.

With over twenty years of pastoral ministry in North America, I once walked through a season of ministry burnout, and was renewed through spiritual formation and spiritual direction — an experience that has since become central to my pastoral calling. I hold a Doctor of Ministry from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. I have practiced the Spiritual Exercises and received training in spiritual direction. I currently serve as Lead Pastor of KW Chinese Alliance Church in Waterloo, Canada, and teach pastoral practical theology and spiritual formation, with a focus on integrating discipleship and pastoral care.

Rev. Yu Jinsong

With a mainland Chinese background, I have followed Christ by grace for 32 years and have pastored churches for 20 years. I graduated with a Master of Divinity from Tyndale Seminary in Toronto in 2006. I have served as a volunteer with FamilyLife Canada, and through practices such as Emotionally Healthy Spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises, I have experienced ongoing inner renewal through the "Growing in God's Love" program. Having tasted the sweetness of spiritual direction firsthand, I went on to receive training in spiritual direction myself. In personal spiritual practice, church fellowship, discipleship training, and leadership development, I delight in walking alongside others — exploring together how to listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit, and to sense and discern God's presence and guidance in our lives.

I grew up in Beijing and came to faith in Christ while accompanying my husband during his studies in North America — a journey that began over twenty years ago. Along the way, my spiritual life has passed through seasons of awakening, seeking, stagnation, and renewal. Through it all, I have come to know deeply that building a genuine relationship with God matters far more than simply doing many things for Him.

In one of the most disorienting and exhausted seasons of my spiritual journey, spiritual direction entered my life — drawing me back into God's presence, where I truly experienced "He restores my soul."

That grace became my calling — to walk alongside brothers and sisters who long for deeper intimacy with God.

From 2018 to 2020, I completed a two-year spiritual direction training program and have continued serving in this ministry ever since. Again and again, God allows me to witness His gentle and real work in people's lives — and with each encounter, I find greater joy in this service.

If you long for a Mandarin-speaking companion on your spiritual journey — someone who will sit with you in stillness and listen for God's voice together — I would be honored to walk with you.

MY JOURNEY INTO SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Over more than fifty years of walking as a Christian, my journey has moved from "hearing about You" to "seeing You with my own eyes" to "following You closely" — a long and winding road. I am deeply grateful that the Lord has never abandoned me, but has remained my constant companion, calling me into a ministry of accompaniment and walking alongside others.

From 2016 to 2018, I was trained through Leadership Transformations Inc.'s Selah Certificate Program for Spiritual Direction in the United States. Since then, I have continued to serve as a spiritual director, accompanying individuals and small groups on their spiritual journeys. In 2024, I completed a year of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, longing to experience Christ's reign more deeply through this discipline — so that the life flowing within might flow outward to others.

My hope is to walk with you on your pilgrimage, helping you grow more attuned to the presence and guidance of the Triune God. If you are open to it, I am available to meet with you in person or online.

Originally from mainland China, I have lived in Canada for many years and have been a follower of Christ for over two decades. My own journey of faith has been deeply shaped by spiritual formation, through which I have experienced God's transforming grace in times of questioning, healing, discernment, and growth.

In response to God's call, I entered the Master of Psychospiritual Studies program at the University of Toronto in 2025, specializing in Spiritual Direction. I have completed the academic coursework and supervised practicum required for spiritual direction ministry.

As a spiritual director, I seek to offer a prayerful, attentive, and hospitable space in which individuals may become more aware of God's loving presence and discern His invitations in their lives. I consider it a privilege to accompany those who desire to grow in their relationship with God through attentive listening, prayer, and discernment. Spiritual direction is offered in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Spiritual Director · Pastor's Wife

Vivian

Originally from mainland China, I came to the University of Toronto in 1991 on a student visa to study computer engineering — and came to faith in Christ that same year.

When I faced a major life challenge, I received spiritual direction, and gradually began to discover the places of bondage in my life. Through that process, I found healing and freedom in God's love — and a new ability to love and serve Him with joy.

Since 2023, I have been studying part-time in the Psychospiritual Studies programme at the University of Toronto's School of Theology, majoring in Spiritual Direction. In the spring of 2026, I successfully completed the coursework and practicum in spiritual direction.

The calling God has placed on my heart — and my deepest burden — is to accompany sisters in their everyday lives as they come to know and experience God, build a real and intimate relationship with Him, notice His hidden grace in the midst of all kinds of challenges, and follow His leading with freedom and joy.
